Castle of the Vampire

Castle of the Vampire is an homage to the old Vampire’s Castle game from the 1980s. The purpose of making this game was to flesh out the text-game engine for other projects (like Star Fracas 17). The original game had a number of bugs and oddities, which I hope I’ve solved, and there might even be a few easter eggs along the way.

What got me interested in making this was a video of Strongbad playing the original game, and I thought “That would be easy to make something like that into a game you could play in a browser.” “Easy” might be a stretch, but it was certainly fun making the engine. I decided to try to make my own version of this game as sort of a guide to how text-based games ought to work. And having finished it, it seemed a shame not to let people play it. So here it is.

WARNING: This game contains a special background with rain and lightning effects. If you’re sensitive to flashing lights, you might want to turn it off. The first time you play it, it should ask you whether you’d like to turn it off or not, but you can always toggle it from the game menu in the upper right corner.
