Square Man Released!

Today is the official release day for Square Man on Steam! If you’re on Windows and use Steam, you might want to check it out!
Square Man is a real-time puzzle game. That means everything else keeps moving even when you’re idle (unlike other puzzle games in which the environment is static until you make a move.) This means that in some levels at least, you’ll need to be fast, in addition to being clever.

Square Man launches with over 250 stages built in across 25+ levels. Hopefully those are challenging enough for now, but the intention is to add more levels (and maybe even some new blocks) in the future. Some of the stages included in the release are simply. (The very first stage is the simplest of all.) “The Basics” is designed as a sort of tutorial, teaching you how to use the various blocks you’ll encounter in the game.
There are currently over 600 different objects in Square Man. Some of these are the same kind of object, just of a different color. (This is especially true of the various gate blocks and tiles.) But don’t think that means that there isn’t a ton of variety. You’ll find blocks that can transfer heat or electricity, monsters that eat stars and blocks, lava pits and openings to the void, teleporters that instantly take you from place to place, block crushers that destroy blocks and monsters, and cloning machines that duplicate blocks (and even sometimes Square Man himself).

That’s what the Level Editor is for. In that mode, you can create and test your own levels, and even export them for sharing. (If you’re thinking about importing any levels from anyone, I recommend caution. Only accept levels from sources you trust.) That way, you can test out how different blocks interact and build some interesting structures. Many stages become their own sort of machine.
